What Is a Dual Fuel System?

A dual fuel system is made up of two major components: an electric heat pump and a gas furnace. This type of system may also be referred to as a hybrid heating system or a hybrid heat dual fuel system. In any case, it provides both heating and air conditioning in the most efficient ways possible.

A heat pump uses refrigerant to move heat out of the air in your home in the air conditioning season. This is a common air conditioning system in our area because it can also reverse direction and become a heater, using refrigerant to move heat into the home instead. In the winter, the heat pump is supplemented with a gas furnace, the other half to the hybrid heat equation.

Why Combine a Heat Pump and Furnace?

So, if a heat pump is a heating and cooling system in one, why would you need to supplement it with a gas furnace? It all comes down to cost. Heat pumps are known for efficiency because, unlike most electric heaters, they move heat rather than generating it with electric resistance.

However, they can only move heat from the outside air as long as temperatures are not too close to freezing. At this point, a heat pump needs an alternate heat source, and gas heating costs a lot less to use than electric resistance heating.

Is This the Right System for You?

A dual fuel system is a highly efficient air conditioner that automatically switches to the most efficient heat source as temperatures drop. This amounts to maximum energy savings if you’re using a forced–air central heating and cooling system. However, that doesn’t make it the right system for everyone. Our technicians are happy to help you find the right fit!
